EC Education MEC says province ready for upcoming matric exams

Eastern Cape Education MEC, Fundile Gade has confirmed the province’s readiness for the upcoming matric examinations, with over 117 000 full-time and part-time learners poised to write.

As part of the department’s drive for excellence, the Last Push Programme has been launched to strengthen academic performance. The aim is to achieve an 85% matric pass rate. The department held a media briefing in Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape.

The Eastern Cape Education Department is confident in the class of 2024. The MEC says this class will not only improve the previous year’s 81,4% pass rate but also the quality of passes. This includes the number of bachelors passes and distinctions.

“For us is to intensify the product of maths and science precisely because it’s a gateway subject not for the province but generally for the nation. You would observe that we are a constructive province, which means that maths and science are going to be required extensively in the few years to come. It’s one of the major investments that will look at that must be taken to consideration,” says Gade.

Various stakeholders were involved in the preparation for this year’s matric exams.

“We have decided to embark on this partnership because we want students who matriculate with the skills that are needed in government. Your planners and accountants and business-minded people who will work in our municipalities and run it once we are all long gone,” says Ineeleng  Molete from Local Government SETA.

“What we’ve done is offer extra classes in the STEM subjects. It’s important for us to grow and development these young minds before they get to us on a tertiary level,” says Khaya Magopeni, UWC Representative.

Matriculants who attended this event feel they have been adequately prepared.

“I am a bit scared because of the tough competition but I have been preparing. And with all the motivation and support I’ve been getting from my teachers I feel I will pass well enough to get into varsity,”

“I am a little nervous, but I feel prepared. All the sleepless nights will pay off and also these extra classes UWC has organised for us during the holiday have helped so much,”

The final matric exams are set to start on the 21st of October.
