Sister City program evoke Namakwa Youth enthusiasm
The Namakwa youth have displayed remarkable enthusiasm for an international six months program designed to enhance entrepreneurial skills, advance qualifications, and provide exposure to opportunities abroad for South African youth. The Local Government Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) and the Namakwa District Municipality organized an induction for the participants at the District Tourism offices on Wednesday, September 18.
Lwazi Mase, one of the participants, eagerly anticipated the educational adventure that will expose rural young men and women from Namakwa to the offerings of China.
“We have been limited to South African knowledge and ways of doing things. I believe this opportunity will broaden our understanding of business operations and enable us to develop valuable connections,” said Mase.
“The government’s initiative is a wonderful way to empower youth and enhance their skills for the benefit of our communities.”
Maruwan Williams, another participant, expressed hope for personal and professional growth.
“The recent increase in the unemployment rate in South Africa during the 2024/25 financial year was concerning. I am hopeful that this opportunity will help advance careers and businesses,” he said.
“In return, the education and exposure gained will be utilized in our communities to improve and transform the local economy.”
The Namakwa District was identified to be part of the sister city program led by LGSETA and the China Culture and International Education Exchange Centre (CCIEEC), with over 15 young individuals participating in the region.
The partnership between LGSETA and CCIEEC aimed to provide training and upskilling opportunities for 270 candidates in South Africa, including employees, unemployed youth, and business individuals operating within the local government sector.
Nikite Hartley, a former Chinese student, offered advice to the youth, emphasizing the importance of adapting to and respecting the culture, tradition, and customs of the Chinese people.
“Our way of life are lenient toward Western culture, and have the liberty. In contrast, the Chinese people are sensitive and reserved, accustomed to the ways of their nation,” she said.
“Exercise caution and use this opportunity to learn. Social culture and interaction may come into play, so be the person who educates rather than taking offense.”
