Green Youth Indaba 2025: Empowering the next Generation for a Sustainable Future
The Annual Green Youth Indaba 2025 marked a significant milestone as it celebrated its 10th anniversary, bringing together young leaders, government stakeholders, and industry experts to promote youth participation in the green economy. Held in KwaZulu-Natal, the Indaba drew hundreds of young people seeking insights and opportunities that align with the country’s sustainable development agenda.
The Indaba served as a vital platform for dialogue, featuring powerful engagements from dignitaries and experts in governance, education, and environmental affairs. Speakers included Cllr Ntando Khuzwayo, Deputy Chairperson of Governance and Intergovernmental Relations at eThekwini Municipality, and Sanele Zulu, CEO of the Green Youth Network. Reverend Musa Zondi, MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, also added to the rich dialogue on green innovation and job creation.
A keynote address from the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr. Nobuhle Nkabane, was delivered on her behalf by Director-General Dr. Nkosinathi Sishi. The Minister’s message urged young people to “focus and tap into opportunities offered by government and the SETAs to ensure no one is left behind.” The message also addressed the country’s pressing challenge of NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) youth and called for greater collaboration to reverse this trend.
Dr. Sishi announced key initiatives from the Department, including the launch of a North West University programme focused on Critical Minerals, the establishment of a Just Energy Transition (JET) Skills Desk, and the creation of new skills development zones. These interventions are intended to support youth participation in the evolving green economy and ensure that South Africa remains competitive in a changing global landscape.
As one of the key stakeholders in the skills development ecosystem, the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) was proud to contribute to the Indaba. LGSETA CEO, Mr Ineeleng Molete, spoke on the authority’s research and qualifications focused on the green economy, including initiatives in waste management, disaster management, building inspection, and road infrastructure.
Mr Molete encouraged the youth to pursue multi-disciplinary career paths and explore opportunities in the local government sector. He highlighted LGSETA’s support offerings, such as bursaries and structured learning programmes that help bridge the gap between education and employment.
In closing, Mr Molete shared a powerful reflection that captured the spirit of the Indaba:
“He who blames others has a long way to go on his journey; he who blames himself is halfway there; he who blames no one has arrived.”
This message served as a reminder to the youth that their journey toward impact and leadership begins with accountability and a willingness to act.
