Strengthening Career Guidance Through Capacity Building

The Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) is enhancing career development support by empowering those who guide young people in their transition from school to the next stages of life. Through capacity-building workshops on Career Development Services conducted across various provinces, LGSETA is equipping practitioners who work directly with youth. These workshops provide the knowledge and tools necessary to help young individuals make informed educational and career decisions.

These engagements particularly focus on reaching rural communities, ensuring that learners and the practitioners who support them have access to relevant and up-to-date career development information. Career advisors and practitioners play an important role in helping young people navigate one of the most important stages of their lives – the transition from school to higher education, training and future career pathways.

During the workshops, participants are provided with critical information that can strengthen the quality of guidance they provide to learners. Topics covered include scarce and critical skills, occupations in high demand, and the importance of choosing the right subject combinations that align with future career opportunities. The sessions also unpack various Post School Education and Training pathways available to learners, providing a clearer understanding of opportunities within universities, TVET colleges and other training institutions.

Participants are also introduced to LGSETA funded learning interventions within the local government sector, including learnerships, internships and other skills development opportunities. In addition, the workshops provide insight into the National Qualifications Framework and its sub-frameworks, helping participants understand how qualifications are structured and how learners can progress within the education and training system. Information on LGSETA occupational qualifications is also shared to highlight career pathways that support skills development within municipalities and the broader local government sector.

By capacitating those who guide young people, LGSETA is multiplying the impact of career development services. These practitioners/educators are often the first source of guidance for learners, helping them see possibilities, understand opportunities and make informed decisions about their futures.
