The Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) was established in terms of the Skills Development Act No. 97 of 1998 and is responsible for the facilitation of skills development within the local government sector.

NETWORK SECURITY SPECIALIST– (1 POST)

POSITION OBJECTIVE / JOB STATEMENT

Brief summary of the main purpose of the job and the primary reason for its existence, scope and range of action.

The incumbent will be responsible for the management and direction of all ICT network and security requirements; to enhance efficient functioning of LGSETA in line with the business strategy and priorities Reporting to the ICT Manager, the Network Security Specialist shall provide technical expertise in all areas of network, system, and application security. The Network Security Specialist shall work closely with the various service providers supporting the LGSETA’s ICT infrastructure and systems to ensure that systems and networks are always designed, developed, deployed, and managed with an emphasis on strong, effective security and risk management controls.

Job Requirements: National Diploma / B-degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or relevant field (NQF level 7)

• Certified Network Security Specialist
• CSSIP
• Ethical hacking certificate

Minimum 5 years’ experience in network and security management. Extensive knowledge of securing network devices and configurations (firewalls, switches, servers, storage) and any other security networking hardware or software tools for on-premises or cloud.

Key performance areas:

The incumbent will pro-actively secure the LGSETA ICT infrastructure and environment against potential unauthorised access, covering:

  • Provides technical expertise regarding security-related concepts to operational teams within theInformation Technology Department and the business.
  • Proactively monitor the environment to detect and implement steps to mitigate cyber-attacks before they occur.

• Review, investigate, and respond to real-time alerts within the environment.
• Review real-time and historical reports for security and/or compliance violations.
• Monitor online security-related resources for new and emerging cyber threats.
• Assesses new security technologies to determine potential value for the LGSETA.
• Conducts vulnerability assessments of LGSETA’s systems and networks.

  • Manage the security of all LGSETA systems.
  • Lead the vulnerability management program that encompasses the annual cyber security assessments, penetration tests, research and reports on emerging threats, to help the LGSETA take pre-emptive risk mitigation steps.
  • Installation of LAN/WAN, upgrades and repairs.
